The Center for Peace, Legal Advice and Psychosocial Assistance is local nongovernmental, non-political, non-partisan, non-for-profit humanitarian civil association, which acts on the protection and promotion of human rights, democracy development and development of interethnic relations.
The Center was founded on August 01, 1996 with the support of the humanitarian organization “OXFAM” from Oxford, Great Britain, and was registered as a civil association with the General Administration’s Office in Vukovar on January 16, 1998.
The Center was registered in the Association’s Register of the Republic of Croatia on September 10, 2002.
The Center is active on the territory of the Republic of Croatia.
The office of the Center is based in the city of Vukovar, Fra. Antuna Tomaševića Street 32.
> The vision of the Center
The vision of the Center is a modern democratic society, the rule of law and respect of human rights and values, the society of tolerance and equal opportunities for all its citizens without discrimination and regardless of national/ethnic, religious, cultural, gender, social or other differences.
> The aim of the Center
The aim of the Center is building and development of democratic society and sustainable development through:
- development of human freedoms,
- protection and development of human rights,
- building the culture of peace and nonviolence as a life’s quality,
- development of interethnic, inter-religious and inter-cultural tolerance and cooperation,
- development of safety feeling and feeling of membership, self-estimation and respect of the others, etc.
> Activities of the Center
Basic activities of the Center are:
- provision of free legal advices,
- reporting and analyzing the state and violations of human rights,
- provision of informative and technical support to the citizens, civil initiatives and initiatives for the economic development,
- conducting public campaigns and advocacy,
- monitoring the work of the Courts and bodies of the State Administration,
- organization of conferences, seminars, trainings, workshops, round tables and public discussions,
- cooperation with the relevant government and nongovernmental organizations in Croatia, and international nongovernmental organizations and international organizations.
The Center implements its activities through the projects and programs, which are generally divided into six, mutually linked thematic fields:
- Protection and promotion of human rights with the emphasis on the rights of refugees and displaced persons and national/ethnic minorities,
- Economic development,
- Education and informing,
- Democratization,
- Peace activities,
- Cooperation.
Previous activities of the Center have been planned and implemented through several dozens of short-term and long-term projects. Project proposals have been adjusted to fit the specific needs observed in the daily work of the Center, and have been based on the gathered information and conducted research. A part of the project proposals has been based on the participatory role of the Center’s beneficiaries. Activities have been conducted individually and in cooperation with the related partnership organizations from the country and abroad.
Basic activities of the Center have been conducted within the framework of the permanent program / project named “Center for Increasing Public Awareness on Human Rights, Direct Assistance and Democratization”. This program was used to assist tens of thousands of direct beneficiaries and was the base for most of the other project proposals and activities of the Center. Beneficiaries of the Center are all categories of citizens regardless of their gender, culture, language, mental of physical abilities, national /ethnic or religious background.
In the previous period, the Center established contacts and concrete cooperation with number of relevant international and local nongovernmental organizations, State Institutions and the media.
The Center is a founder and a member organization of the national Coalition for Promotion and Protection of Human Hights, active since 2000.
> Organizational structure of the Center
The Assembly is the highest body of the Center and consists of all regular members. Regular Assembly sessions are conducted at least once in every two years and extraordinary sessions upon the request of the Management Board, Supervisory Board or upon the request of one quarter of the members.
Management Board is the Center’s highest decision-making and representational body between the two sessions of the Assembly. Management Board consists of the President of the Management Board and four members of the Management Board. The Assembly elects the President and the members of the Management Board for the period of two years with possibility to be re-elected for the same functions after the completion of the two-year mandate. The mandate of the current members of the Management Board expires on January 26, 2013.
Members of the Management Board elected at the regular session of the Center’s Assembly, held on January 26, 2011 are:

- Mr. Dragan Pepić, member
- Mrs. Ankica Mikić, member
- Mrs. Danka Katanić, member
Supervisory Board conducts financial supervision over the work of the Center and submits reports to the Assembly. Supervisory Board consists of three members and is appointed by the Assembly for the period of two years with the possibility to be re-elected. The mandate of the current members of the Supervisory Board expires on January 26, 2013.
The President manages the work of the Assembly and the work of the Center in accordance with the law, Statute and general acts of the Center and in accordance with decisions of the Assembly and the Management Board. The President is responsible for the legality of the work of the Center and represents the Center. The Assembly elects the President. The mandate of the President lasts for two years with the possibility to be re-elected in the end of the two-year mandate. The mandate of the current President expires on January 26, 2013.
The President of the Center is Mrs. Ankica Mikić.
> Center’s Office Staff
The office of the Center currently employs four persons:
- Mr. Branislav Tekić, legal advisor,
- Mr. Dragan Pepić, legal advisor,
- Mrs. Danka Katanić, administrator / bookkeeper,
- Ms. Ivana Juričević, projects assistant.
Depending on the specific needs and range of the activities, the Center additionally hires required number of associatesand volunteers.
> Awards and recognitions
For the contribution in resolution and promotion of refugee issues in the region, in 1998, the Center was awarded with the special annual award of the regional weekly “Odgovor” from Belgrade - ''EX PONTO''. |
